About CAB Lab

Dr. Sponheim’s Cognition and Brain (CAB) in Psychopathology Lab is dedicated to studying severe and persistent mental disorders including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, mild traumatic brain injury, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Our methods include collecting symptomatic, neurological, and genetic data from individuals who live with these conditions.  The general goal of this line of research is to improve our understanding of these psychological irregularities in order to better prevent, diagnose, and treat them.

With the support of funding by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense (Congressionally-Directed Medical Research Program), National Institutes of Mental Health, and local foundations, the CAB Lab has conducted studies at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center and the University of Minnesota. We measure brain function and structure using cognitive assessments and state-of-the-art neuroimaging techniques including high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), dense-array electroencephalography (EEG), and magneto-encephalography (MEG). You can find more information about our current research projects on the Research page.
